A few years ago I had the same idea. I had considered growing orchids or cactus but realized I could not compete with southern growers here in North Dakota. Then I received several unknown plants from a family whose mother had died and were looking for a good home. After doing some research I identified them as Clivia miniata and Adenium obesum, fairly obscure plants with value and the ability to grow under my conditions. The Clivia have spectacular blooms after the holidays and cheer up the house in midwinter. The Adenium lend themselves to bonsai and are also easy to graft. At first I was unable to afford mature plants so I began purchasing seed from China, S. Africa, Thailand and Australia. In the beginning I kept my young plants on windowsills but now they have taken over my entire house. With the money I have made selling them on eBay and to nurseries I am building a 16×28 foot attached greenhouse this spring and get my house back. I wish you luck. RScott
Growing exotic and tropical plants is a great idea and can be much easier than you might think , check this site out for tips and ideas. it will help you learn how to grow them and pick what plants are best for you and your area.
