How to find hobbies when nothing sounds interesting?

hobbies
Bunny asked:

I currently only have one hobby, which is collecting and photographing dolls.

In the past, Ive done all kinds of art and photography…and I got bored with it all because it was lonely. I would like to find something to do besides doll stuff. Ive met everyone in my state there is to meet who own my type of dolls. No others interest me.

Currently I have one friend, and I would like to make more. However I dont drive, and I have ZERO dollars to spend on things like admission fees, and supplies for new and expensive hobbies.

I litterally have NOTHING that interests me. I love art, but im getting bored with it now. I dont like to read a lot, and I’d like to get out of the house and not spend so much time on the net..

But it seems like every option I come up with, is either too expensive, too far away, or it just doesnt hold my interest.

How can I branch out and find new hobbies (and new people) when Im so limited as far as money and transportation goes?

  • Take up juggling. Its a stress reliever, does NOT take any special sorts of skills (a person as young as 8 or as old as 80 can learn to do it), can be very entertaining and its a good way to get new peoples attention and strike a conversation possibly making new friends. Its a skill that just takes time and practice and costs nothing. There may even be a club somewhere nearby depending on where you live.

  • Go to local colleges, usually the art department has displays and exhibits, and the students are more than willing to greet you. Mind you, it’s free.

Consider taking things around your house and turning them into something more. If you would allow me to start emailing you, we could talk about hobbies more.

Having a hobby does not have to take up money, it sounds to me like the only reason nothing sounds interesting is because you think it all involves transportation and spending money. I don’t have my license OR a job, and i’m a college student…I also only have 1 friend (and a boyfriend but that’s not the point)..and she doesn’t drive either.

  • Well, being as you have asked on the computer, I’d say there is your answer. If you don’t mind being on the computer, there is an entire world of things to do on it.

I personally do 3D modelling and game design with 3DS Max. It’s pretty fun, time consuming, and rewarding to boot.

You ccould also learn Photoshop. Since you like art, you can create entirely new creation processes using a computer… unless of course you like material art. I sculpt stone and clay so I understand the need sometimes.

There’s a whole world of things to do on a computer though… and it doesn’t cost a thing or require driving.

  • if you dont drive you have to first cultivate a friend who drives. I got into making dolls myself, and joined about three internet doll groups. then i discovered one girl lived about 30 miles from me and she was single so she came to see me and eventually we went to a convention together. due to her health we eventually drifted apart. but you can find people in this world who share an interest, if you simply will develop interests, after the doll thing kind of faded for me i joined a bellydancing troupe. no one was forced to perform and if you didnt perform in public you didnt really have to make the costumes or anything, though i did both. it was fun, but then i moved to las vegas and now im with someone and though i still enjoy my hobbies i dont need the company of others . i dont know what you call expensive, the dolls i designed and made were made with felt, hand sewn, and stuffed with polyfill, and had painted faces with acrylic paints, i could use fabric scraps for the clothes and i used yarn for hair, and i dont think i really spent a huge ammount doing that. it was a lot of fun testing my skills with simple items. I even taught my own design doll when i went to the convention and the price i was paid for the classes covered my costs to go to the convention. i also draw and do watercolors, but i sprinkle beading and other things in between so i dont get bored with the same thing all the time. right now im crocheting small purses for summer, a ball of crochet thread costs about two dollars and a hook about a dollar and a quarter, you can find stitch patterns on line, and you just make a rectangle and fold it over, whip stitch the edges, line with plain cotton if you like. each one costs me two or three dollars to make, when ive made a few then ill make some patchwork ones with the left over scraps of the cotton i used to line the crochet ones. at the dollar store i got four 7 inch zippers for a dollar so i can make zip tops for the patchwork ones. life doesnt have to get so expensive or involved. you are just letting depression get to you. turn on some sunshine in your soul. im old and crippled, but i keep on keeping on because i dont know how to stop living.

  • well it sounds like a real challenge for u . Why don’t u try going to a craft store( joanns, ragshop, acmoore, micheals) and just walk around and talk to people that r there buying things for their crafting. Maybe u can get a new idea and make new friends at the same time.

  • You have a camera. A walk around the neighborhood could bring a number of new subjects into sharp focus. Kids playing in the park. An owner walking the dog. Roses in bloom.

The walk will be beneficial health-wise. Sunshine is great for improving your disposition. Looking at the hood with a new eye will give you a different perspective. Use your existing hobby and branch out to other subjects – people, places things (other than dolls and art).

There’s a whole wide world out there just waiting for you and your camera and it really doesn’t require travel or a lot of money.

As for meeting people, offering to take someone’s picture is a great opening gambit. Giving them a copy of the picture encourages a second meeting. Go out. Meet your neighbors. Have fun.
