YARN SHOPS

Michaels is a good place to buy knitting needles, but if you want to buy great yarn, you have to look elsewhere. Here are our favorite local yarn stores.

Suzoo's Wool Works
711 W. 17th St., Unit F-9, Costa Mesa. (In a business center on the southwest corner of 17th Street and Pomona Avenue.) 949-574-0005. Closed Sunday-Monday and Wednesday.

Housed in a converted storage unit in an office mall, Suzoo's is a little hard to find but is worth a visit for its friendly service and well-organized supply of good yarns. Limited hours.

Yarn Lady
24371 Avenida de la Carlota, Suite M, (In Oakbrook Village, next to Trader Joe's) Laguna Hills. 949-770-7809. Closed Sunday.

Large, spacious and well-organized by color and type of yarn, with a big selection of multi-colored and textured fun yarn. Lots of workshops and yarn trunk shows. Twice a year (next event is Dec. 2), the store pulls out yarn from its warehouse and sells bags of yarn for half-price.

Velona Needle Craft
5701-M Santa Ana Canyon Road, Anaheim Hills. 714-974-1570.

This superstore has been around for nearly 30 years and it has every yarn imaginable. The wares are roughly cataloged by price and brand. Beginners might find it a little chaotic, but the knowledgeable owners will help you nail down what you need.

SMALL AND CHIC

The following are two small, beautifully decorated stores with young staff and good selections for high-quality natural fibers.

The Sheared Sheep
2675 Irvine Ave., Suite E, Costa Mesa. 949-722-7977. Closed Monday.

La Petite Knitterie
25642 Crown Valley Pkwy., Suite E-3, Ladera Ranch. 949-347-7073. Closed Monday.

WORTH THE DRIVE

If you live west of Costa Mesa, we suggest going to Long Beach for yarn. Alamitos Bay Yarn Co. is a well-organized, medium-size store just over the county line, near Seal Beach. Banana Berry is a longer drive, but the store also sells fun furniture and home goods.

Alamitos Bay Yarn Co.
174 Marina Drive, Long Beach. 562-799-8484. Closed Monday

do you have a joann fabrics, michales or hobby lobby? all of these carry embroidery supplies. joanns runs a sale about every 6 weeks on embroidery floss. there are some good sites on the internet for free cross stitch and embroidery patterns. if you want me to find them again just e-mail me and i'd be more than happy to search my favorites to find them again.

good luck.
