First you have to see the material of what´s made. Probably wood paint will work, if it wasn’t metal.
Non-toxic! Gloss water-based acrylic paint would be good. Prime it first for a better finish.
Check the label for toxicity.
It has to say on the label it is safe for baby furniture. Kids chew on their toys so it is very important that it does NOT contain lead or other toxic stuff.
What is it made off? Use wood paint for wood or metal paint for metal. Make the surface smooth and ready for paint by sanding and if necessary varnish after for protection. Use non-toxic paint. DIY stores sell paint for all materials so ask instore.
More than likely you would use a acrylic water based paint.
I would use Createx(I would of course airbrush it though)
I believe createx makes a thicker paint for brush work.
As for a clear coat I would use a can of clear from wallmart or a craft store.
I don’t think you have to worry about your clear coat(harming those hungry kiddies) as long a as you let it dry for atleast 24 hours.If you would have bought the horse from a store it would have a coat of clear on it so it shouldn’t be that toxic as long as your kids aren’t eatin the entire horse.
Sand it thoroughly. Prime it with an alkyd (thins with mineral spirits) primer designed for the surface you’re going over; use wood primer over wood, metal primer over metal. Paint it with alkyd paints.
Alkyd paints tend to dry harder than latex, and therefore tend to be more durable. There are also some amazingly heavy duty latex paints, and if you call around to your local paint stores, they might have some, or they might just claim to have a paint that is amazing when it really isn’t, but on average unless you really want to put some effort into doing some research, alkyd enamels are your best bet. It’s also more traditional for a carousel horse.
For the carousel look, you’ll probably want to go with a high gloss enamel, which is good because high gloss paints tend to be more durable.
