Chess is a good mental game.
Try gardening or growing your own veg. It doesn’t have to cost a lot, you could get cuttings or seeds from friends and family, many of the gardening mags also have seeds on the covers at this time of year. You can plant in any container ex: cress in a plastic cup or butter tub, radish in an old pan, potatoes in old compost bags etc. You could join in seed swaps, in fact I would be willing to send you some of my spare seeds if you wish and obviously, you are in the UK. I have all kinds of things on the go in my garden, and it gets you out in the fresh air which can only be good for you. I find it is relaxing and because you need to tend the plants/veg, it stops you dwelling on the aches and pains you may have. Not only that, but if you grow your own veg, you can be sure that you are getting the healthiest veg around. Give it a go, it,s great fun and very rewarding.
I hope this helps and wish you a long, healthy and happy future.
Bird watching is a great hobby. Buy or borrow a bird book with lots of pictures, put a bird feeder in your yard and enjoy.
Most bird watchers establish a lifetime list in which they record the date and place where they first identify each bird. Whenever you go for a walk in your neighbourhood or travel on business or vacation, take your bird book and a field guide with you and try to add to your list. I personally have 57 birds on my list but I know of people who have several hundred.
Another great hobby that you can do on your own or share with family and friends is Geocaching. It is like a world-wide treasure hunt and there are over 700,000 caches world wide. There will be a dozen or more in your immediate area. For detailed information on this exciting sport go to: geocaching.com

Take up gardening. It can reward you with beauty, harvest, and something you can be proud of to show off to friends and family. Read up on gardening subject over the internet. It will really put a smile on your face that you don’t even realize is there.
You could also do some volunteer work. There is plenty out there and you can add it to your resume.
Learn how to crochet. You will be sitting on your but, but its kind of neat to sit back and say, Look what I made.
If you are good with words, start writing.
If you are good with art, do something with that talent.
Put an ad in the paper that you will clean houses.
You can do anything you put your mind to.
