Anybody that lives in Barbados and I suppose any tourist that bothers to travel around the island will have at some point been subjected to the very strange ritual of a Bajan male having an outdoor pee. For many others and including myself we find such behaviour absolutely disgusting and the laziness of such people astounds me.
Virtually every day I see someone having a pee in the street or at the side of a busy road. In fact just the other day a guy was peeing about 20 metres from young school kids. Today there was a guy at the side of a busy road, who could have walked a few yards and he would have been able to pee behind some trees, but that was too much trouble for him. He decided it was appropriate and civilized to pee at the edge of the pavement.
Outdoors peeing happens at all times of the day and it could happen anywhere. I don’t know if the problem is that these guys haven’t been toilet trained from a young age and that they don’t know that you are actually meant to go and find someplace, which has a urinal where you can go for a pee.
I don’t know if the Prime Minister of Barbados David Thomson reads my blog, but I know he should be because he will get the occasional tip that will help to make Barbados a better place. I know how important the tourist industry is to Barbados and that the government spends a lot of dollars every year trying to entice people to visit this beautiful island. Well Prime Minster having to suffer people peeing wherever they feel like isn’t quite an image of paradise that tourist really want take home with them.
The answer Prime Minister is to make it a criminal offense just like it is in the UK. In the UK the culprit is given an instant fine, which saves a whole heap of bureaucracy and the courts time. Is it really too much trouble for people to go and find a toilet when they need to go to the toilet, I personally don’t think so!
