Bonsai
Watching bonsai trees develop and forming them into amazing sculptures is an absorbing and very rewarding pastime. Growing bonsai isn’t an expensive hobby with only a few tools needed, but a beautiful bonsai tree can be much more of a centrepiece in your home than many an expensive ornament. A bonsai is a living sculpture.
Bonsai are container grown trees that are developed to be miniatures of the full size counterpart. Bonsai are created from almost any perennial wood stemmed trees or shrubs that produce branches and is able to develop small through container confinement with the assistance of crown and root pruning.
A Bonsai tree can be grown from seeds, from young shoots lifted from the wild, (please observe any local laws regarding removing wild plants in your region), or can be ordered as mature planted bonsai. Although growing bonsai from seed is the slowest route, but you do have total control over how your bonsai will look.
Bonsai trees are planted in containers that not only contain root growth, but are also designed to further enhance the beauty of your bonsai tree. Special soils can be purchased that provide the ideal conditions for your bonsai tree to grow in.
Many methods are employed to shape and give unique character to your bonsai tree including leaf trimming, wiring, grafting on other plants, dwarfing and deadwood, (a method of aging bark). Not many special tools are needed to sculpt bonsai, and these are readily available very cheaply. All that you require to get started can easily be bought from a specialist bonsai nursery.
Bonsai trees are available as indoor and outdoor varieties, some bonsai trees are improved if they are left outdoors during summer and then grown inside during the winter.
And for anyone that likes the idea, but would prefer not get involved in growing bonsai, you can buy artificial bonsai trees.
If you are considering if growing bonsai trees is right for you, I say give it a try, bonsai are simple to grow and maintain, take very little of your time, every bonsai is unique, and who does not admire a bonsai every time they see one.
