What hobbies would be impressive on a university application?

DJ asked:

I currently have a Saturday job working nine hours a week, and I do a martial arts class once a week. And I run for charity every year.
I was thinking about getting a Sunday job and volunteering down at my local primary school helping with the netball team?
Would that be impressive enough to make me stand out, or would I have to do a lot more?
I am also taking part in a junior sports leader course if this improves it at all?
But I’ll definitely start doing a lot more, thanks !

  • It depends on where you’re applying to school. If you’re looking at top-tier schools, sadly, karate, working a job, and running a marathon once a year isn’t going to cut it. Colleges want to see you take a leadership position as it emphasizes responsibility.

Now, you can keep those hobbies, but think of it this way–excelling at your job and getting promoted, becoming an assistant teacher for the karate class, and planning and running in the charity. Isn’t that a bit more impressive? Enjoy what you do and always try your hardest!

  • Welding
    Machining

(These are lost arts, and therefore impressive…)
